Medius Oriens is Latin for ‘Middle East’, though this terminology did not become popular until the dawn of the 20th century. The delineation of the Middle East varies, but here will refer to the Greater Middle East, which includes all of North Africa and some of Central Asia. This is the most exciting, geopolitically important region in the modern world, but the history and culture of the land is just as thrilling. The writing at Medius Oriens explores the history, politics and culture of the peoples not only in this geographical space, but also of those who are dispersed abroad, who have their roots in this land. We will also ask how history and culture may illuminate modern events, or at least how they may lead us to a deeper understanding of these challenges. Thus, Medius Oriens bridges the past and the present of this fascinating region.
